Information about this Painting

AABA (Le blanc guidant le peuple) is one part of a single unite original Triptych called AABA (Bleu, Blanc, Rouge).

It is painted with Acrylic on Fine linen, and measures in total 250 cm x 51 cm (x3).

The AABA acronym stems from the Jazz standard Improvisation structure, the three colors is an allusion to the French flag or the Dutch flag – or any other flag. The theme is that of ‘Belonging’ (‘Appartenance’) versus free dissociative forces. The near human figures seem to swing in their moment (‘in the air like clowns) with no apparent knowledge of their destiny within the hitherto improvised stage. The color White is their only guide.

More on triptychs (Wikipedia):

triptych (/ˈtrɪptɪk/ TRIP-tik; from the Greek adjective τρίπτυχον “triptukhon” (“three-fold”), from tri, i.e., “three” and ptysso, i.e., “to fold” or ptyx, i.e., “fold”)[1][2] is a work of art (usually a panel painting) that is divided into three sections, or three carved panels that are hinged together and can be folded shut or displayed open. It is therefore a type of polyptych, the term for all multi-panel works. The middle panel is typically the largest and it is flanked by two smaller related works, although there are triptychs of equal-sized panels. The form can also be used for pendant jewelry.

Despite its connection to an art format, the term is sometimes used more generally to connote anything with three parts, particularly if they are integrated into a single unit.

A Pentaptych? More on polyptychs (Wikipedia):

polyptych (/ˈpɒlɪptɪk/ POL-ip-tik; Greek: poly- “many” and ptychē “fold”) is a painting (usually panel painting) which is divided into sections, or panels. Specifically, a “diptych” is a two-part work of art; a “triptych” is a three-part work; a tetraptych or quadriptych has four parts; pentaptych five; hexaptych six; heptaptych (or septych in Latin) seven; and octaptych eight parts.

Polyptychs typically display one “central” or “main” panel that is usually the largest of the attachments, while the other panels are called “side” panels, or “wings”. Sometimes, as evident in the Ghent and Isenheim works, the hinged panels can be varied in arrangement to show different “views” or “openings” in the piece.

Polyptychs were most commonly created by early Renaissance painters, the majority of which designed their works to be altarpieces in churches and cathedrals. The polyptych form of art was also quite popular among ukiyo-e printmakers of Edo period Japan.

Some medieval manuscripts are polyptychs, particularly Carolingian works, in which the columns on the page are framed with borders that resemble polyptych paintings. Altar displays may also form polyptychs.
